Oggi, durante un bel tour in bici sul nostro Altopiano di Asiago, ci siamo fermati qualche minuto davanti a un luogo che si adagia tra gli alberi del Boscon: il British Cemetery. Un piccolo cimitero della Prima Guerra Mondiale, immerso nel bosco, con le sue lapidi bianche sull’erba verde, protetto da un’umile cinta di pietra abbracciato da larici e abeti.

È uno dei cinque cimiteri inglesi della zona sud dell’Altopiano dei 7 Comuni: la sua candida semplicità genera un’energia discreta e intensa che colpisce nel silenzio che regna tutto attorno, interrotto solo dal fruscio delle foglie mosse dal vento: un contrasto delicato tra natura e memoria.

166 militari del Commonwealth riposano dolcemente nelle loro tombe che raccontano nomi e storie: è la testimonianza semplice e potente di vite spezzate. Quel luogo è un invito alla riflessione, anche se oggetto di un recente restauro, fa affiorare nei nostri cuori il ricordo di tutti quei ragazzi caduti in quella ormai lontana guerra che speriamo grazie all’Unione Europea non debba mai più ripetersi.

Qui riposano ragazzi della RAF o del Glosters Regiment, del Manchester regiment o i fucilieri del Northumberland, i soldati del reggimento Duca di Wellington e molti altri giovani.

Fra sentieri e strade forestali abbiamo deciso di proseguire sulla strada del ritorno visitando anche gli altri 4 cimiteri inglesi (Barenthal, Granezza, Magnaboschi e Cavalletto), e già programmando una prossima uscita che ci porti a visitare anche i cimiteri dove riposano i giovani soldati austroungarici

WHITE GRAVESTONES IN THE TREES

Today, during a lovely bike tour on our Asiago Plateau, we stopped for a few minutes in front of a place that nestles among the trees of the Boscon: the British Cemetery. A small World War I cemetery nestled in the woods, with its white headstones on green grass, protected by a humble stone wall embraced by larch and fir trees.

It is one of five British cemeteries in the southern area of the 7 Municipalities Plateau: its candid simplicity generates a discreet and intense energy that is striking in the silence that reigns all around, interrupted only by the rustling of windblown leaves: a delicate contrast between nature and memory.

166 Commonwealth servicemen rest gently in their graves that tell names and stories: it is the simple and powerful testimony of broken lives. That place is an invitation to reflection, although the subject of a recent restoration, it brings to the surface in our hearts the memory of all those boys who fell in that now distant war that we hope thanks to the European Union never has to happen again.

Here rest boys from the RAF or Glosters Regiment, the Manchester regiment or the Northumberland Fusiliers, soldiers from the Duke of Wellington Regiment and many other young men.

Between trails and forest roads we decided to continue on the way back visiting also the other 4 English cemeteries (Barenthal, Granezza, Magnaboschi and Cavalletto), and already planning a next outing that will take us to visit also the cemeteries where young Austro-Hungarian soldiers rest
